RON HEDGER INDUCTED INTO EASTERN MOTORSPORT PRESS ASSOCIATION HALL OF FAME

Hedger, a member of the Saratoga Automobile Museum’s board of trustees and a renowned veteran motorsport journalist, lauded by peers covering motorsports

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (Jan. 24, 2024) – Ron Hedger, a renowned veteran motorsport journalist and a member of the Saratoga Automobile Museum’s board of trustees, has been inducted into the Eastern Motorsport Press Association Hall of Fame.

The Eastern Motorsport Press Association (EMPA), founded in 1969, is committed to recognizing excellence in motorsports reporting and those who have excelled on the track.

Hedger was inspired to write his first column on track safety more than 40 years ago, after a series of crashes over one summer took the lives of NASCAR modified driving legend Freddy DeSarro and driver Mike Grbac and injured Hedger's brother Randy. Hedger submitted the column to National Speed Sport News (now Speed Sport) under the ownership of the late, legendary Chris Economaki, beginning a colorful career covering the sport.

“We could not be prouder of our very own Ron Hedger being inducted into the EMPA Hall of Fame,” said Megan Hennessey, executive director. “Ron’s contributions to the motorsport industry are prolific, but even more so, his contributions as a board trustee – from providing articles, context of the history of the sport, and volunteering here at the Museum – are immeasurable.”

“On behalf of the entire board of trustees here at the Saratoga Automobile Museum, we heartily congratulate Ron Hedger on his induction into the EMPA Hall of Fame. Ron’s commitment to the motorsport industry is reflective of his volunteer work here at the Museum and we are fortunate to have him among our ranks,” said David DePaulo, board chair.

Hedger joined the Museum as a member during its first year of operation in 2002, becoming a board trustee a few months later.

As past president of EMPA, Hedger is considered one of the best in motorsport journalism, earning a reputation for “fair and unbiased reporting” of the sport for years, providing those who race or who spectate a detailed and descriptive account of races, profiles, and news. Hedger was inducted in a ceremony in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. earlier this month.

A replica of the Volkswagen “Light Bus,” an icon of the 1960s counterculture movement, is on display at the Saratoga Automobile Museum.

Dr. Bob Hieronimus painted the original Light Bus in 1969 for his friends in “Light,” a Baltimore-based rock band. However, the fame came later that year when the bus, a Volkswagen Type 2 van, appeared at the Woodstock Art and Music Fair.

“It became a symbol of the Woodstock Art and Music Fair and the greater generational call for peace, love and unity after a snapshot of the van by the Associated Press was widely circulated in newspapers and magazines across the country,” said Volkswagen in a statement. “The van even 
appeared in the liner of the official Woodstock album.”

Tire Rack Street Survival program at the Saratoga Automobile Museum

Rain. Cold. Ideal conditions to coach 21 upstate New York teenagers through a Tire Rack Street Survival program at the Saratoga Automobile Museum on Sunday, the 23rd of April, 2023.

Led by the Mohawk-Hudson Region SCCA, the day-long exercises in the classroom, and out on the adjoining Saratoga Performing Arts Center parking lot, were run by a team that also included the Patroon Chapter - BMW Car Club of America, and staff of the Museum.

Milton Fire District Number 1 added an extra challenge to the students. One-half of the skid pad was made even slipperier by high-volume water sprayed from a regulation fire hose. For the students, it was no different from driving up and down the nearby Northway (I-87) on the way to school, work, and shopping that is a way of life on the edge of the Adirondacks.

The constant downpour did not dampen the enthusiasm of parents and students alike who stood in line to see for themselves what a semi-driver sees from the cab, or doesn’t see, in the mirrors or even over the hood in front. That demonstration was followed by an airbag detonation (actually two) that provided graphic evidence as to why one should keep one’s driving hands at the 3 and 9 o’clock positions. And why a passenger should never ride with their feet on the dashboard!

The only TRSS program activity that was truly dampened was the traditional class picture. What with that exercise moved indoors at day’s end, rather than during a sunny lunchtime, it was ‘herding cats” to get most of the students in camera range as they and their parents started to head for dry homes.

As always, TRSS staff and instructors gathered together to swap stories of how their students had gone from timidity to confidence as the day progressed. It’s always a toss-up as to who gets more out of the TRSS experience. The students, or is it the instructors?

An exclusive first look: Bond vehicles on display at Saratoga Auto Museum

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (NEWS10) — Saratoga Automobile Museum is racing into its newest and quite possibly most exciting exhibit to date. Its name’s Bond, Bond in Motion, and NEWS10 is getting a first look at the top-secret installment.

“Every car and prop you see was in a movie or used in a movie,” said Zach Skowronek, communications manager for the museum. “Car person or not car person, it’s just really cool to come in here and see.”

Every car curated was rolled in straight from the bond production company or the Ian Fleming foundation. The vehicles span every bond era, from Sean Connery to Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig. The versatile displays include souped-up Aston Martins and BMWs to submarines and a jet pack.

“We have a DB 10 which was in the movie Spectre that was specifically made for the Bond franchise by Aston Martin,” said Skowronek. “There’s only 10 of them.” “The Aston Martin DB 5, this specific car was actually seen in five movies.”

Curators hope the exhibit will immerse visitors in movie magic.

“We’re hoping to make it kind of look like a Hollywood production as you walk in,” said Skowronek. They also hope Bond’s vehicles will boost admissions. “This can really draw a bigger audience in terms of moviegoers, bond fans and we’re looking to really see a new customer base.”

Bond In Motion opens to Auto Museum members on November 17 and to the public the very next day. Just like the movie franchise, curators think the exhibit will be around for a long time.

Lost Speedways Returns for 2022

With the end of another racing season on the horizon, attention is turning to off-season activities. And at the Saratoga Automobile Museum, nothing is more popular than the “Saturday after Thanksgiving” Lost Speedways program.

“We came back strong last November after losing a year to the Covid-19 pandemic,” said event organizer Ron Hedger. “But this year will rank among our best programs ever as we look at a wide swath of the past as well as peer into the future.”

Opening the program will be the always popular “Motorcycle Guy,” Mark Supley. But for 2022 his focus will change, as he has also begun restoring Soap Box Derby cars and researching past activities in the region.

Next up will be Mike Zagata, who will take listeners back to the glory days of the old Fonda Speedway Drag Strip with assistance from photographer Frank Simek, who pulled a treasure trove of old photos from his archives to illustrate Zagata’s presentation. The photos run from Zagata’s personal cars to shots of NHRA superstar Shirley ‘Cha Cha’ Muldowney’s early days to some amazing home built creations.

Following intermission, attention will turn to the future with interviews of two of the regions up and coming stars, Jack Lehner and Jack Speshock. Both are favorites at the nearby Albany-Saratoga Speedway, especially with younger fans, and current plans are for their cars to be on display as well.

“We want people to know that Lost Speedways isn’t only for ‘old guys,’ said Hedger. “The two Jack’s represent the future of area racing, as many of the current favorites are edging towards retirement. And they have a different view of the sport as well, as to them the ‘old days’ are ten years ago, not 50 or 75.”

The final segment of Lost Speedways 2022 will look back on Fifty Years of Super DIRT Week with a panel of SDW winners. Rob Yetman has won at both Syracuse and Oswego in the Pro Stocks, Rocky Warner has been to Syracuse’s Victory Lane in both the Pro Stocks and Sportsman races and Kenny Tremont Jr won both the 358 modified and big block 200 races on the historic Syracuse mile.

“I hope to have another big favorite from the Syracuse days join the panel as well,” added Hedger. “When everything is in place, we’ll announce his name along with further details on the day’s events. In the meantime, fans should mark November 26th on their calendar with a big star.”

Attendees will also appreciate seeing a great addition to the Racing in New York gallery, the offset supermodified that the legendary Nolan Swift drove from two laps down to win the International Classic at Oswego Speedway. Lovingly restored by master craftsman Steve Miller of Mexico, NY, the car will move to Saratoga after completion of its summer/early fall outdoor display schedule.

Trip Planning

The preparation starts when you're planning. Laidback Trip suggests creating an itinerary so everyone knows what to expect. Don't schedule too many activities in one day, and be sure to pencil in some rest time for the whole family. If possible, let everyone in your family pick one can't-miss activity from your destination, and make sure those are priorities.

For some reason, it seems the crazy just leaks out of your kids when vacation begins. To combat this, be sure you have some downtime each day when kids can play and relax. The closer you can stick to your rules and routines from home, the more normal things will be. Still, the occasional midnight ice cream or staying up late to watch the fireworks is to be expected.

Another important element is to be sure your destination is family-friendly. It's not hard for your children to behave in a place that is built for families. However, if you take them to a 5-star restaurant at dinner time, you can expect a few looks when the youngest starts using the tablecloth to play peekaboo at the top of their lungs. Try to set your kids up for success so everyone can have fun.

Saratoga Automobile Museum to exhibit rare 911 RS Porsches

14 Porsche RS models from the Steven Harris Collection will be on display

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (Sept. 9, 2021) – Considered to be one of the few complete collections of Porsche 911 RSs in the world, the Saratoga Automobile Museum is proud to announce Rennsport: The Complete Collection (RS) - the second exhibition this year featuring vehicles from the Steven Harris collection. The exhibit is presented by Porsche and Porsche Clifton Park.

The RS exhibit will open to the public on Friday, Sept. 10 at 10 a.m. and run through Spring 2022. 

This complete set of Porsche Rennsport, or RS, cars showcases the automakers decades long pursuit of perfecting their iconic 911. Visitors to the Museum will be able to view the 14 world-class examples alongside special photography of the cars by renowned automotive photographer James Lipman. 

Exhibit highlights include the 1973 911 Carrera RS, the 1974 911 Carrera RS 3.0, the famed serial #18 1984 911 SCRS, the rare 2004 911 996.2 GT3 RS, and the ultra-rare 2011 911 997.2 GT3 RS 4.0.

The sweepstakes winner will take home a brand-new 2021 Porsche Taycan

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (April 15, 2021) – The Saratoga Automobile Museum’s sweepstakes, now in its third year, is one of the largest fundraising efforts to benefit the Museum’s educational and exhibit programming. The 2021 sweepstakes is presented by Porsche and Porsche Clifton Park.

The Saratoga Automobile Museum is an important and integral part of the Saratoga Springs and regional communities. The sweepstakes is one way to ensure the Museum is able to continue the mission of educating and enriching the community with the history and culture of automobiles and educating the public to the dangers of distracted and other unsafe driving practices to reduce accidents and fatalities.

Saratoga Automobile Museum to offer free admission for kids

Children 10 and under will receive free admission to the Museum during Winter Break.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (Feb. 11, 2021) — The Saratoga Automobile Museum will be providing children, ages 10 and under, with free admission to the Museum as part of the Museum’s on-going educational programming during winter break from Wednesday, Feb. 17 to Sunday, Feb. 21, 2021.

While educational events and hands-on programs are suspended due to COVID-19, free admission for children allows the Museum to continue its founding mission of educating the general public and students to the role of the automobile in New York State and the wider world.

“We are excited to offer parents access to a socially distanced and safe way to keep their kids engaged,” said Carly Connors, executive director. “With our free admission for kids during winter break, we’re hoping to introduce kids to different forms of automotive history, technology and inspiration.”

Children, and parents, can expect to see automobiles from as early as 1913 to ones as modern as 2020. They can also learn about the history and cars of the Dyson Racing team from Poughkeepsie, New York, which is the Museum’s main exhibit showcase that concludes in April.

(Jan. 5, 2021) – The Saratoga Automobile Museum has announced that George Fisher of Saratoga Springs, N.Y. is the winner of the Museum’s 2020 sweepstakes, sponsored by Keeler Motor Car Company of Latham, N.Y. Keeler Mercedes General Manager Peter Connolly pulled the winning ticket from thousands of entries on Dec. 30, 2020.

George and his wife had moved to Saratoga Springs over a decade ago and spend time visiting the Saratoga Spa State Park and the Museum to take in the various exhibits.

Auction achieves 70 percent sell-through rate in its fourth year; bolsters Saratoga Automobile Museum and its education initiatives

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (Sept. 23, 2020) – The Saratoga Automobile Museum has announced that the Saratoga Motorcar Auction, sold $3.7 million in vehicles and automobile memorabilia. The Auction took place on the grounds of the Saratoga Spa State Park on Saturday, Sept. 19.

“The Saratoga Motorcar Auction remains a tremendous undertaking and its success could not have been realized without the incredible partners and sponsors that the Museum has been able to attract,” said Kevin Biebel, Chairman of the Museum’s Board of Trustees. “Bravo to the entire staff and team of volunteers at the Saratoga Automobile Museum for putting together another world-class auction. In just four short years, this annual event has become a major attraction for car collectors and automotive enthusiasts alike.”

The Auction serves as the Museum’s major annual fundraiser. Proceeds from the Auction supports the Museum’s Safe Driving Initiatives, including the Distracted Driving Safety Program, a program that reaches nearly 25,000 students annually. Auction proceeds also support the Museum’s evolving exhibition programming.

“This year’s Auction further solidified the Saratoga Motorcar Auction’s standing among the national auction houses,” said Bill Windham, auction director. “The increased quality of consignments and the volume of online and phone bidders this year was incredible.”

Total sales were $3.7 million. The sell-through rate for the Auction was 70 percent, a substantial increase year-over-year, despite the fact that this year’s Auction was reduced in scope and length due to COVID-19 restrictions.

With NYS safety protocols enacted, which included closing the event to spectators, the Auction pulled in over 11,000 online spectators to watch the day-long event.

“The success of this Auction, in the midst of a global pandemic, is a massive win for the future of the Museum’s initiatives,” said Carly Connors, executive director. “I cannot thank our staff, volunteers, consignors and bidders enough for following all NYS and CDC safety guidelines to make our event successful and safe.”

2011 Porsche 911 Speedster: $239,000

1970 Porsche 914/6: $137,500

1959 Chevrolet Impala: $115,500

1931 Pierce Arrow Model 42 Phaeton: $82,500 (all proceeds benefiting the Saratoga Automobile Museum)

Saratoga Automobile Museum to exhibit motorsport artwork by world renowned artist Simon Ward

The art of Simon Ward will showcase the expanse of racing heritage to visitors

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (Aug. 6, 2020) – The Saratoga Automobile Museum has announced it will exhibit the artwork of lifelong automotive painter, Simon Ward. The artwork will be displayed in the Museum’s Dammerman and Rosen Galleries.

The exhibit will run through Sunday, Nov. 1 and showcases art that has been painted throughout Simon’s career. Simon was born in 1964 and developed a love of motorsports at an early age. His first Grand Prix was the 1972 British Grand Prix at Brands Hatch. His paintings have been commissioned by numerous motorsports teams, owners and fans. Simon’s artwork hangs permanently at the Sebring Regional Airport, home of the first world championship endurance race, a circuit he has been associated with for several decades.

Simon’s work has also been exhibited in both Great Britain and the United States, including an exhibition at the renowned British Grand Prix F1.

"The Saratoga Automobile Museum is excited to showcase these stunning pieces of motorsports art,” said Carly Connors, executive director. “Simon’s generosity in bringing his work to our Museum will enhance our visitor’s experiences and the paintings tie in nicely with our Dyson Racing: The Private Collection exhibit.”

Saratoga Automobile Museum to host Drive-In Consignment Day on Saturday, July 11

Discuss and learn more about consigning a vehicle that could be auctioned at the fourth annual Saratoga Motorcar Auction in September

 SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (July 6, 2020) — The Saratoga Automobile Museum has announced that it will host a drive-in consignment day at the Museum on Saturday, July 11 to promote the upcoming fourth annual Saratoga Motorcar Auction taking place this September.

 From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., prospective consignors will have the opportunity to meet in-person with the Auction team to discuss consigning their vehicle for the auction. Should the prospective consignor and the Auction team decide the vehicle will be part of the Auction, the team will work with the consignor to estimate an value range for the vehicle, take professional photographs on-site, and execute a consignment contract with the Auction.

 “Our drive-in consignment day is a great opportunity for prospective consignors to go through the consignment process in-person with our amazing team,” said Bill Windham, auction director of the Saratoga Motorcar Auction.

 Appointments for the drive-in consignment day are not required but are encouraged by either e-mailing bill.windham@saratogaautomuseum.org or by calling (518) 401-5180.

The Saratoga Motorcar Auction, now in its fourth year, will take place Friday, Sept. 18 and Saturday, Sept. 19 on the stage of the Saratoga Performing Arts Center. In the auction’s third year, nearly 300 vehicles were part of the event. This year, the auction will feature incredible rare and classic vehicles and automobilia. The Auction is the largest annual fundraiser for the Museum’s exhibit and educational programs.

Per New York State and CDC guidelines, face masks and social distancing will be followed and required to ensure the safety of our attendees, staff and volunteers.

Saratoga Automobile Museum reopens to the public with Dyson Racing | The Private Collection

Dyson Racing: The Private Collection will showcase the expanse of Rob Dyson’s racing career and personal automotive collection

 SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (July 1, 2020) – The Saratoga Automobile Museum will reopen to the public under New York Forward Phase Four guidelines on Monday, July 6 beginning at 10 a.m. The Museum’s reopening brings a new exhibit entitled Dyson Racing | The Private Collection.

The exhibit will run through Sunday, Nov. 1 and showcases cars that were part of the history and legacy of the Poughkeepsie racing outfit and its owner, Rob Dyson. Visitors will have a rare glimpse into the growing collection of historic Indy race cars and other vintage automobiles owned by Rob Dyson.

 A main draw for Museum visitors will be the Dyson Racing 1984 Porsche 962, chassis 101. This Lime Rock Park winning car has a unique history, as it was the first private race team 962 made available from Porsche. This Porsche 962-101 won the IMSA Award for the ‘Most Historically Significant IMSA GTP Car’ at the Amelia Island Concours in 2019. Also, of special note is the 1913 Isotta Fraschini Tipo IM.

The Museum thanks Rob and his team for bringing these special vehicles to the Museum. We are certain that these cars will inspire those who come through our door, especially in a time when people need inspiration,” said Carly Connors, executive director. “The Museum will also be following all New York State and CDC COVID-19 regulations to ensure the highest safety for our visitors, staff, and volunteers when we reopen.”

 Under New York Forward Phase Four guidelines the Museum is implementing the following safety procedures;

·      To allow for physical distancing, total Museum capacity has been reduced to 25 percent.

·      Timed admission tickets are available for purchase online and will allow visitors to reserve a specific date and time to enter the Museum, alleviating congestion in the front lobby and throughout the Museum.

·      Museum members who receive complimentary admission will be given the opportunity to place their ticket reservation in advance of the general public.

·      Walk-In admissions are welcome but will be limited. Please use social distancing when coming to the Museum’s visitor’s entrance. 

·      Visitors and staff must wear face masks and practice social distancing while in the Museum.

·      Increased cleaning and disinfection will take place both within Museum spaces and office areas, while protective clear acrylic shields have been installed at the Museum admission desk and at the check-out counter in the Museum Gift Shop.

·      Additionally, staff offices, spaces, and schedules have been adjusted to accommodate physical distancing. All employees and volunteers will be given a health screening assessment each day prior to entering the Museum.
